Affordable And Clean Energy

Nina and her family watched as the new lights in their home flickered on. For the first time in their lives, there was light—the same light they had seen coming from the city each night. This new electricity powered their entire home. They now had electricity to power their stoves to boil water, ensuring they had clean water to drink each day.

“Thank you so much, sir,” Nina said to the men who installed the solar panels on their home. All she could say was thank you—because what else could she say to the people who had given her family the electricity they needed for everything?

“Of course, Nina, it’s our pleasure. These panels are top-notch, so they should last for at least a couple of years, and they will also help reduce pollution.”

Clean Water And Sanitation

All for Water

All the years of blister-covered feet and long walks for water were finally coming to an end.

Yeah, whatever. This is all so stupid. Why do we waste our whole lives just getting water? We should be in school. I don’t want to live my whole life just carrying water.

“We will get water!” the village leader shouted with joy. “These people will be setting up stoves and latrines and water for our village. You’ll now be able to learn and go into the world.”

Now we have the opportunity to go into the real world. Even though we were doing fine before.

“All right, then!” Nyra joked.

“Yesterday, it was scorching hot out; today it’s raining,” Lea said.

At the end of the week, they were able to cook and not cough from the smoke; they were able to drink clean water, not the old water teeming with who knew what? They could see their futures brightly.

They could see how they could become doctors or lawyers, teachers or engineers. They could become anything they wanted because they wouldn’t be spending five hours a day just to get water.

Gender Equality

A Real Beginning
With that, Lorrie closed the door and took with her all the burdens Lisa had carried for the past nine months.

Watching Crystal take such great care of her daughter, she knew that she’d made the right decision coming to a place that could give her baby real food and a place to sleep each night.

Lisa awoke to the sounds of two women whispering loudly next to her bed, but by the warmth in the air, she could feel that there were many more people around her.

Even though she had only met them last night, Lisa felt like she could trust them.

Lisa was already planning how she was going to move the furniture around so her baby would have more room to crawl around and she would have her desk in a position where she could see everything.

Lisa had indeed already figured out the logistics and made a plan; she just needed somebody to tell her she could do it. And Randy did just that.

Four years later, Crystal, Lorrie, Abby, Jane, Randy, Sandy and many other friends that Lisa made along the way, all watched and clapped proudly as Lisa walked down the graduation aisle and shook with each of her amazing and not-so-amazing professors. Little Lisa clapped the loudest, proud of her mom.

Quality Education

Away Together

The meadows, which were beautiful stretching into the sky this morning, now felt like arms that enclosed her.

Moira was astounded by the whole school’s determination and dedication.

The entire day was spent sharing life stories.

She knew she was the same Moira as before, a Rotary scholar, a person of service, a teacher. Her hair and eyes were still brown. But in her heart, she knew she had changed.

Every one of those teachers and students had changed her a little; they left a mark on Moira, a memory in her mind, and a place in her heart.

We will be learning about the world and how important you each are to it.

She realized that was exactly why she’d gone into that career in the first place—a career of fundraising and bringing together resources for people around the world.

Moira felt a surprising longing. She didn’t want it to be the last time she saw them.”

With flashlights crisscrossing, they set out through the countryside.

It was all worth it, though, when she saw the looks on the kids’ faces.

Among the group’s many connections and large skill set, they were able to quickly connect with many new resources to help the students.

Strength in Service

“The streets were frozen and empty, seemingly stripped of life.
They approached the first home that was attached to the side of a small convenience store. By the time their frozen hands even reached the door, it was opened, and the family ushered the women into blankets by the fire and started offering food.
“Come in, I’ll get some chai,” the dad said as the children stared. They were in awe of the women’s power and passion that pushed them through.
“Do you want cookies?” the mother said as she rubbed their hands, hoping to get some warmth into them.
“Oh, thank you,” Maira and Ayesha said. They were happy that the people were so kind. But they really weren’t that surprised because that was the warm culture of their world, and the kindness given to them because they were there to serve out of the goodness of their hearts.”

Good Health And Well-Being

For Those Who Couldn’t

She was no older than 10; she had beautiful large brown eyes, pitch-black hair, and skin the color of rich chocolate. Everything about her face was calm but her body was frozen in pain.

“I feel faint,” she said with her hand on her head. “Go get Mom and Dad!” her older sister, Rashi, yelled to the children around them.

Finally, a few silent moments later, a nurse emerged from the only operating room in the whole building. She scanned the room, looking for the family that needed the most help. Her eyes shot to the family with the little girl.

One long beep and a minute of pure silence. Nothing was moving, nothing could be heard, and it seemed like everyone in the room had stopped breathing.

That day, none of the memories came to her mind; it was the first day the hospital was being partnered with organizations that had sponsored equipment and travel for 50 heart transplants to their hospital.

Zero Hunger

A Small Act

Before she knew it, her exhaustion slipped away and the rhythm of making sandwiches filled her with serenity.

Each time she handed out a sandwich, the smile on the recipient’s face made her happy.

She drove to the homeless shelter to drop off her sandwiches. As she pulled up, she was struck by the sheer number of people still in the shelter. Dozens of faces turned to her in anticipation of food.

“Oh, thank you, Nadia, we knew you would pull through,” Samantha, the shelter manager, said, already gathering and distributing the food. “Do you want to help?”

Nadia was tired and it was late, but with newfound energy, she said “Yes.”

But walking out, she no longer felt tired; rather, she was happy to have been able to help these people, even if it was just for one evening.

Truly Thankful – Excerpt

“Mama, are we getting a real turkey for Thanksgiving this year? We can get enough food to eat seconds!”

Gloria also saw a pair of small eyes peeking out from behind the curtains of the home.

Right when they were turning around, the door opened. Light flooded onto the porch, and a little boy stood on the other side of the door.

“Well, actually, you do, ma’am. We are a service club, and this season, we’re trying to bring a complete Thanksgiving meal for children in the city.”

“Oh my, God bless you. Thank you so much for bringing this food. My babies weren’t going to have anything for Thanksgiving.”

Her emotion was very tightly wound up between work and having to take care of all the kids.

“Mama, are we getting a real turkey for Thanksgiving this year? We can get enough food to eat second helpings, and actually be full?”

Moments ago, the street had felt cold and dark; it now felt warm and full of life.

No Poverty

On The Other Side

They could still hear the clamor and rumble of the city, but as they rounded the corner, everything went silent.

The Rotarians soon realized the scale of need in Tijuana. Despite their efforts to help, the stark contrast between their lives and those of the people they met was overwhelming. They were reminded how easy it is to overlook people in need, but with their small contributions, they were able to make a big difference.

Ralph’s reflection on the woman’s situation and their renewed determination to be more aware of those around them brought them closer. Every sandwich shared, every care package handed out, and every moment of kindness made the world a little less invisible for those often overlooked.
