New Beginnings

“I don’t know what happened to them, or where they are, but I pray each day they are fine.”

As Liana darted through the Jordanian traffic, she quickly fell into the same brisk pace as everyone around her. She marveled at how, a mere week ago, the city of Amman had felt so large and confusing. Now she felt much more at ease.

Lost in thought, it wasn’t until she heard the bell of the café door opening that she realized she’d arrived at her meeting with Latifa, a member of the Rotary that was sponsoring her travel and part of her time in Jordan.

Liana hesitated. She thought she’d planned everything out well before she came, but now she looked at all the people around her, each immersed in their activities, not even noticing her and her boxes.

She knocked on the door of the first house. A woman, who could be no older than forty, opened the door. Liana spoke to her in Arabic, apologizing for intruding and explaining that she was an American exchange student there through an organization of service.
